The cleverly-designed Renault Scenic has gained great popularity in Europe where compact people movers are the preferred form of family transport.

Higher fuel prices and a growing environmental conscience make the Scenic very attractive to Australian buyers.

Safety too is a big consideration. The Scenic achieved the maximum score in Euro NCAP crash tests. All models are equipped with front, side and curtain airbags, a lap sash seatbelt and head restraint for each individual rear seat, plus anti-lock brakes with emergency full power assistance.

The Scenic's interior shows how much can be achieved in a small space. There's a drawer under each front seat, big door bins, a small covered bin in each of the front doors and covered bins in the floor as well.

Back-seat passengers also get convenient storage that includes floor bins, slide-out drawers and flip-out tables on the front seat-backs. The centre console slides back to permit rear seat passengers access to its large storage bin.

The three individual back seats can each be moved forward or back, double folded or easily removed.

The cargo bay is easy to load and the floor space can be extended to 1.6 metres if you remove the back seats. The front passenger seat also folds forward to accommodate longer objects. A full-size spare on a steel wheel is underneath.

It's powered by a front-wheel drive 98kW 2.0-litre, four-cylinder engine with six-speed manual or four speed automatic. The ride is delightfully smooth and quiet.
